Parents
In these days of excess and materialism, where kids have more toys and games than they know what to do with, many children are discovering the joys of helping those in need and appreciating what they already have.
This year, talk to your child about having a party without the excess by having a fundraiser birthday party in support of the Humane Society. Make your child's next birthday a meaningful and memorable one.
Fundraising Ideas
Ask guests to bring a donation for the Humane Society in lieu of gifts. Food, blankets, cat litter, toys, gift certificates or cash all make great donations (see our Wishlist for a full list of needed items.)
Instead of loot bags, make a donation in the guests name. Fancy pencils, bouncy balls, glow sticks and candy in most loot bags are quickly forgotten once they get home. For the cost of a loot bag full of novelties (which can easily run $5 - $10), you can send each child home with a personalized certificate as a memorable, feel-good party favour.
Planning Your Party
It's important that your child be on board with the idea of a fundraising birthday party - this is their special day after all, and they deserve to feel special. If your child isn't sure, this is a great time to talk about philanthropy and volunteerism (did you know that people who learn to volunteer as children are more likely to help others as adults?)
In your invitations, explain that you are having a party to support the Humane Society and that instead of gifts you would prefer if they brought a donation. Include a few suggestions for a donation.
Have an animal-themed party, with decorations, decorated cake and animal-themed activities.
After the party, have the birthday child come down to the Humane Society to make their birthday donation. We'll have a certificate of appreciation, a card for them on their special day and a photo to commemorate their birthday on our website.
