Volunteer
The Humane Society is always looking for volunteers to socialize animals, assist around the shelter, join our various specialized programs, participate in fundraising events or contribute in any way to the success of the shelter.
Volunteering at the Humane Society is a wonderful, rewarding experience. We offer volunteer opportunities for people of all age groups, from all walks of life, whether you have an few hours a year or time every day.
The Humane Society relies on the efforts and generosity of people like you, who are willing to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves and also have some fun.
Walk, Cuddle and Socialize
In addition to food, water and shelter, animals need love, attention and exercise. Whether it's cat cuddling, dog walking or grooming, our animals would love your attention. Come in as often as you like - there's no time commitment or rigid. scheduling.
Fill out a volunteer application form and come to an orientation session to get started.
This is a great opportunity for the whole family - volunteer together and teach your kids compassion, responsibility and the joy of helping those in need. Enrich your own lives and the lives of our animals.
Headstart - On the Road to Adoption
"Headstart - On the Road to Adoption" is a program of basic training for shelter dogs using the clicker training method. K9 Dog Training Centre in partnership with the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society began this pilot project April 19th, with 4 dogs and completed the first 6 week program on May 24th, 2005.
Clicker training is a positive reinforcement method of training that creates confident, obedient and social dogs that interact well with people, can easily be taught new behaviours and are highly adoptable.
We are looking for new volunteers to help with initial training and ongoing training for graduates. The need to reinforce the basic skills acquired by these dogs is an important part of the program. We need to provide continued stimulation and personal contact to assist in creating adoptable family pets. Graduates of the Headstart program have made incredible progress.
If you have any dog training experience (as an instructor or the owner of a dog) and have 1 - 2 hours a week to participate, please call Judy Decicco at 475-8803 to get involved.
Seniors Visiting Program
We are looking for volunteers to get our Seniors Visiting Program back in gear. The visiting program takes some of our best behaved animals to retirement homes to socialize with the residents. Help brighten someone's day with a loving visit from a furry friend. This is a wonderful opportunity pets, seniors and volunteers.
If you have a flexible schedule and can commit to regularly scheduled visits, please call...
